Updated: Aug 14, 2023

If you're involved in a motor vehicle accident in British Columbia, Canada, there are several steps you should take to ensure your safety, gather necessary information, and report the incident properly. Here is a general outline of the steps to be taken:

1) Ensure Safety:

First and foremost, prioritize the safety of everyone involved. If possible, move your vehicle to a safe location away from traffic and turn on hazard lights. Check for injuries and call emergency services if necessary.

2) Exchange Information:

Exchange relevant information with the other parties involved in the accident, including:

  • Names, contact information, and driver's license numbers of all drivers involved.

  • License plate numbers and descriptions of the vehicles involved.

  • Insurance details, including the name of the insurance company and policy numbers, if applicable.

3) Document the Accident (MVA):

Collect as much information as possible about the accident to assist with any future claims or legal proceedings. Important steps include:

  • Take photos of the accident scene, damage to vehicles, and any visible injuries.

  • Note the date, time, and location of the accident.

  • Gather contact information from any witnesses present at the scene.

4) Report the Accident (MVA):

In British Columbia, you are legally required to report an accident to the police if any of the following apply:

  • There are injuries or fatalities. due to MVA

  • There is significant property damage.

  • One of the drivers is uninsured.

  • A criminal offense, such as impaired driving, is suspected. If the police do not attend the scene, you can visit a local police detachment or call their non-emergency line to report the accident.

5) Notify Your Insurance Company:

Contact ICBC (Insurance Corporation of British Columbia) as soon as possible to report the accident and provide them with the necessary details. They will guide you through the claims process and advise you on any required documentation.

  1. Seek Medical Attention: If you or anyone involved in the accident has sustained injuries, seek medical attention promptly. Even if injuries seem minor, it's important to get a medical evaluation to document any potential issues.

  2. Preserve Evidence: Preserve any evidence related to the accident, such as vehicle damage or medical records. These documents may be required when filing a claim or dealing with legal matters.

  3. Consult with Legal Professionals: Depending on the severity of the MVA and its consequences, you may want to consult with a lawyer specializing in motor vehicle accidents. They can provide advice on your rights, the claims process, and any potential legal actions.
